Creation & Maintenance of Website Serves as central resource for information about our organization, activities and groups in the Ishmael community, tools to encourage wider readership and usage in schools, and for the collection of funds. March 2002-present Created by Dr. Howard Ditkoff and Mr. Brian Wilgenbusch. Currently maintained primarily by Dr. Howard Ditkoff. 90% of past time was devoted to this activity.
Past Marketing Creation of and use of tools, such as flyers, signs, pamphlets, and a mainstream-tailored website, to promote Daniel Quinn’s work and resulting local groups in the community. November, 2001-present Marketing tools have been created and used by many members of the Ishmael community worldwide and shared through our website. 10% of past time was devoted to this activity.
Friends of Ishmael Society School Essay Contest Introduce Daniel Quinn’s work, Systems Thinking, sustainability, and diversity to high school students, while encouraging critical thinking skills and creativity. Plan to hold initial contest during 2005 school year. Initiated by Board members and incorporating supporters, volunteers, judges, and funders from throughout the community of supportive individuals and organizations. 30% of time in 2004 and 2005 will be devoted to this activity. Percentage will diminish subsequently once structure and administrative operations are established.
Continued Maintenance and Upgrade of Website Continue providing current resources. Improve site with more user-friendly redesign, addition of database functionality, and implementation of interactive features. Will begin instituting website improvements in 2004 and continue upgrades and maintenance in an ongoing fashion. Board members of The Friends of Ishmael Society, especially involving Chris Hardie, Howard Ditkoff, and Oshyan Greene, and incorporating input from members of the Ishmael community. 30% of time in 2004 and 2005 will be devoted to this activity. Percentage will diminish subsequently once new, fully functional website is established.
Additional Marketing Increase marketing through creation and use of advertising, displays, promotional materials, and websites such as ReadIshmael.com. Will begin creating and using new and improved marketing materials in 2004 and continue in ongoing fashion. Board Members, especially Mark Meritt, Howard Ditkoff, and Oshyan Greene, with input from Ishmael community. This activity will consistently comprise 15% of the organization's time.
Book Distribution Help provide needed and requested copies of Daniel Quinn’s books to teachers, youth leaders, schools, libraries and others, as well as supporting individuals and organizations who concentrate on this activity. Helped coordinate fulfillment of two requests in 2003. Will improve ability to respond as requests are received in the future. Board members of Friends of Ishmael Society, along with members of the Ishmael community and related organizations such as ShareIshmael.org and Outreachbooks.com. This activity will consistently comprise 10% of the organization's time.
Creation and Promotion of Educational Materials Create and promote materials that help educate the community about Quinn’s work, Systems Thinking, sustainability, and diversity. Will begin creating and promoting new educational materials in 2004 and continue in ongoing fashion. Board members, especially Mark Meritt, and members of Ishmael community. This activity will consistently comprise 10% of the organization's time.
Provision of Grants Provide funds to individuals and groups that work to further our mission and goals. Will begin to provide grants as fundraising allows. Anticipate beginning to give grants in 2005 and increase focus in subsequent years. Grants will be given at the discretion of the Board of Friends of Ishmael Society. Grant-giving will initially comprise only 5% of the organization's time, increasing to 15% in the long-term as funds allow.
Creation and Maintenance of Office/Conference Center Establish central institution for operations of Friends of Ishmael Society, which will also serve as a conference center, hosting events relating to Daniel Quinn's work, Systems Thinking, sustainability, and diversity. The creation of this center is a very long term goal and we do not anticipate beginning to focus on it for several years. The creation of this center will require the energies of all board members of the Friends of Ishmael Society, as well as widespread support from the Ishmael community and other interested individuals and organizations. No time will be devoted to this activity for several years, after which it will comprise an increasing percentage of the organization's time.
